Somatics or Counseling? How are they different?
While somatics is a type of therapy and involves discussion — it is unique to traditional talk therapy aka counseling. I am not licensed to diagnose mental health disorders or conduct specific therapies utilised by counselors. Similarly, counseling is different from somatic therapy and does not incorporate the physical movements or somatic practices we are trained to use. BOTH are beneficial and I often recommend my clients to use a combination of both depending on their concerns and needs. There also may be times I refer clients out to a different mental health or medical provider. This doesn’t mean we can’t continue our work together but it is important for people experiencing specific mental, physical or emotional challenges to have access to all of the necessary care they need. If you have more questions on this topic, feel free to contact me.
Is somatics covered by insurance? What is a sliding scale?
Unfortunately, no. The disappointing reality is that many necessary mental health and wellness resources are still inaccessible. This is why I am passionate about offering a sliding scale to make sure that my sessions are available to everyone. A sliding scale is a service fee adjusted for income. However, I do not ask for your income information; I trust you will make the right choice for you. This structure allows me to work with people at different rates, so that my services are accessible to everyone. Please contact me if you are not able to afford any fee at this time, I try to give back to the community through free groups and services. If I’m not currently offering free resources, I will make sure you get the support you need.
I’m nervous about trying this modality, What are sessions like?
We will go at your pace. These practices are designed for people who maybe have not had the results they hoped for in other therapeutic settings. Whatever you need and whatever feels comfortable, supportive and helpful to you, is what we will do. You take the lead. However much movement, talking or different somatic practices we do depends completely on the particular client, specific session and most importantly, your comfort. If you are still nervous, contact me for a free virtual consultation.
How do I know somatics is right for me?
I fully believe, no matter who you are or what you are experiencing — somatics will benefit you. Many of us are not taught what emotional regulation is and how our bodies are designed to protect us and help us thrive. These are practices that have been largely eradicated at the hands of capitalism, imperialism and colonialism. However, it is knowledge many communities have preserved. If you want to have a deeper understanding of your emotions, your physical response to your emotions, decrease stress, improve your interpersonal or familial relationships, develop self-compassion or just change your outlook on yourself and your life — I believe these practices will help you on your journey.
